Python Community of Learning In-Person

Have you ever been stuck doing boring and time-consuming work by hand and wondered if there was a more efficient way to accomplish it? Have you ever wanted to create the hardest game of Hangman ever or live out your childhood dream of being a hacker? If so, you might be interested in learning Python!

Python is an incredibly powerful programming language with a wide variety of applications including web and internet development, data science, software development, and natural language processing.

This semester, a group will be meeting weekly on Wednesdays from 3-4 PM that will explore Python and its applications. At the first meeting, we will download all necessary software and discuss interests, areas, and applications to explore throughout the semester. In future meetings, we will work through the basics using the online textbook, Automate the Boring, as well as develop and code some larger projects based on participants’ interests. No prior knowledge of Python or of programming is required.

Furthermore, if natural language processing, especially of classical languages, is of interest, a Classical Languages Toolkit (CLTK) group will be meeting on Fridays from 2-3 PM beginning on February 14th in the Carpenter Digital Media and Collaboration Lab. CLTK uses Python to work with classical language data and would provide an excellent opportunity to apply Python programming skills.
