Makerspace Intensive: Design for Textile Production In-Person
This four day workshop will explore the tools necessary for creating a textile pattern suitable for production. Register to attend on Handshake at: https://brynmawr.joinhandshake.com/events/1667897/share_preview (LibCal registrations will not be used)
During this intensive we’ll develop original designs, experiment with hands-on methods for marking fabric (such as block printing and silkscreen), and use digital tools to design and format a repeating design: these digital designs will be uploaded to a print-on-demand service at the end of the intensive.
Schedule: Tuesday, March 11th thru Friday, March 14th, 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. each day. Design work done on computers in Canaday 315, and hands-on practice done in Park Science room 100 (right across the hall from the Makerspace).
We’ll start by looking at patterned textiles from a range of traditions and discuss the processes by which different fiber craft traditions are adapted for mass production, and then move from a series of exercises and design challenges to a self-directed project. Students who successfully complete *all four days* of the workshop will have the opportunity to print yardage of their work with an outside vendor. The Makerspace
Students enrolled in this intensive will be introduced to:
- Software and techniques used to create production-ready designs.
- Approaches to design, material and market research.
- Prototyping and iterative approaches to the design process.
- Sustainability and ethical considerations in production and distribution.
- Copyright, trademark and IP: how these apply to both the creation and marketing of textile designs.
- Tools and platforms that can be used to produce and market small scale work by designers.
Participants will have time to work independently during these sessions so Makerspace staff can support with suggestions and troubleshooting as necessary- please come prepared to work on a combination of digital and traditional approaches to your designs!
No previous experience with fabric or design tools is required, but we recommend that students who are brand-new to design software (of any type) take some time to acquaint themselves with Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator prior to the intensive: the Makerspace will be offering workshops for both programs throughout the year, and staff are available to answer any questions you might have.
The work done in each session is cumulative will build on skills covered in the previous one, so participation will require attendance at all scheduled sessions: please ensure that our meeting times work with any other scheduled commitments.
